Free Family Fun Day: Mama Went to Jail for the Vote

March 7 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Commemorate Women’s History Month with Free Family Fun Day: Mama Went to Jail for the Vote at the Goodhue County History Center. On Saturday, March 7th, visit the History Center and learn about the brave suffragists that fought to have women’s right to vote recognized. The Mama Went to Jail for the Vote program begins at 1 PM. Also come see our new Exhibit from the League of women voters “A century of Civic Engagement: League of Women Voters Minnesota”

As the 1900s began, women were not able to vote in political elections—despite the government having a critical role in shaping their lives. Groups formed to protest, and change, the law to recognize women’s right to vote. These suffragists were met with stiff opposition, and even went to jail on numerous occasions for their protests. On March 7th, honor these brave women at the History Center by reflecting on their struggle and completing the Jailed for Freedom craft activity, where children will make a pin that represents the same ones worn by suffragists after they were arrested.
