History Break- Silas Foot’s Big Idea: The Advent of the Duluth, Red Wing and Southern Railroad

June 15 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

In the 1890s, DRW&S has the potential to change Red Wing and Minnesota history with a groundbreaking railroad route. Foot envisions a northern railway passage that could bypass Chicago’s monopolistic grip on Midwest rail shipments, and enlists allies willing to make a new railroad happen. Backed by capital from Foot’s flourishing St. Paul shoe manufacturing plant and his Red Wing tannery, along with support from influential Minnesotans and Red Wing investors, the DRW&S comes to life. Lucius Hubbard, former two-term governor from Red Wing, becomes the project’s public face and leading proponent. This innovative attempt to literally and figuratively change the course of railroading in middle America would fail, but that doesn’t mean Foot’s big idea was a bad one.

Join us at noon on June 15th for  the final part of a six part history break series “Red Wing and Its Place in Minnesota History: Untold Stories.” With Red Wing native and award-winning author Frederick L. Johnson, in consideration of four decades of historical research on Minnesota, takes an in-depth look at significant local stories his general histories could not cover. Each topic addressed considers an event, person or trend significant in Red Wing and Goodhue County’s past, and in Minnesota history as well. As always, he relies on primary-sourced documentation and images to illuminate his talks.
