History Break: Rationing Fashion

August 16 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Spend your lunch hour at the Goodhue County History Center for our monthly free lunchtime program!  Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch with them for our History Break programs.

Ruth Nerhaugen will explore the changing fashions of women during World War II.

World War II had a profound effect on the life in countries around the world. One of the areas that saw dramatic change in the United States was fashion. Although what people wore was not in itself a critical factor, the war’s effect on the fashion industry – and everyday wardrobes – was a reflection of the changes our society was undergoing. How did women cope with rationing, restrictions, and shortages? How did the clothes women wore reflect the way their roles changed, especially in the workplace? How did they compensate for the limitations on fabric and accessories? These and related topics are explored in this History Break program.
