History Break: The Riedell Skate Story

October 17 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Spend your lunch hour at the Goodhue County History Center for our monthly free lunchtime program! Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch with them to enjoy while they soak up stories.

Minnesota declared the first week of October “Manufacturing Week.” Although delayed, the Goodhue County Historical Society wants to contribute to the state’s effort to raise public awareness of the importance of manufacturing in the Goodhue County community. Join us for History Break to learn about Riedell Shoes, Inc., more commonly known as Riedell Skates.

No one knew back in the early 1900’s when Paul Riedell was born in a small Mississippi River town called Winona, that he would be the founder and owner of Riedell Skates, Inc. During his childhood years, he loved skating and his passion continued to grow into his adult years. After he took a job at the Red Wing Shoe Company, his enthusiasm for skating grew, and he made it his mission to make a skate boot that would finally fit well on his wife’s foot. When he was not at his regular job, he learned about the physiology of feet. In fact, he even obtained foot bones from doctors so he could understand and incorporate this science into the design of his skate. Today, Riedell Skates have a reputation as a quality product and, their ice and roller skates are sold throughout the world!

Alice Fitschen, Riedell Historian, will present this topic.
