Red Wing: “Cradle and Original Home of Western Basketball, 1895-1970”

September 23 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Ask any Minnesota sports fan in the 1950s about the state’s most popular winter attraction, and the answer would be boys high school basketball. Every city, town and village had a team, and Red Wing, with four state championships and three runners-up trophies, had captured the most hardware. School size did not matter—all battled to be the one true prep basketball champion. But Red Wing boosters made another claim about the crowd-pleasing sport: Their city was “the cradle and original home to Western basketball,” and they had proof to back up that boast. Join local historian and author Frederick Johnson at the Goodhue County Historical Society (GCHS) for a talk and discussion about Red Wing’s unique basketball tradition.
