Walk into Local History: Churches of Red Wing

The Goodhue County Historical Society presents a new tour, Walk into Local History: Churches of Red Wing which explores the many churches located near down town Red Wing. This program is the first of 2018’s Walk into Local History program series. The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and tickets must be purchased through the Goodhue County Historical Society prior to May 12.

Religion played a major role in the lives of Red Wing’s first settlers. America was under the influence of the Second Great Awakening, an early 19h century movement that revived and spread Christian interest throughout the nation. In fact, he first white residents of Red Wing were dedicated missionaries who traveled to the area as a result of their evangelical religious duties. As new settlers poured into Red Wing, they quickly began organizing small congregations of multiple denominations based on their background and ethnicity. During this tour, you will learn some of the highlights in several church’s history between 1850 and 1950 as well as the architectural achieves of the current church buildings. Join us on this stroll through main street as we discuss key points in history of the following churches: St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, First United Methodist Church, Christ Episcopal Church, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, United Lutheran Church, and First Lutheran Church.
