Women at the Very Heart of the Great War

Ames Sheldon will discuss many of the roles American women who went to serve in France played there in support of the Great War. In addition, she will discuss the primary sources she used in the process of doing research on the war, and she will read from some first-hand accounts. She will also talk about her award-winning novel Eleanor’s Wars which tells the story of a woman who drove an ambulance during the Great War and the impact of her experience on her husband and children over the following years. Eleanor’s Wars won the Benjamin Franklin Gold Award for Best New Voice in Fiction. Eleanor’s Wars will be available for purchase ($20 per book – including tax) at the conclusion of the presentation.

 

 

Speaker Bio: A former journalist, Sheldon was a lead author and editors of Women’s History Sources: a Guide to Archives and Manuscript Collections in the United States, which helped to launch the field of women’s history in the 1970’s.
