Position Type:  Full-time (40 hours per week)

Salary:  Starting at $28,000, but may be higher commensurate with experience.

 

Position Summary:  Curator of Objects & Exhibits is responsible for coordination of the three dimensional objects collection as well as exhibits of the Goodhue County History Center.  He/She will lead staff members in the acquisition and preservation of the collection of three-dimensional objects donated or purchased by the Goodhue County Historical Society.  He/She will direct the rotation and development of exhibits.

 

Reports To:  Executive Director

 

Supervises: Special projects staff, interns and volunteers assigned to this position.

 

Major Duties:

Object Collection Management

  • Curator of Objects & Exhibits will provide oversight of the three-dimensional collections held by the Goodhue County Historical Society.  All accessions of objects will be properly researched, cataloged, and stored according to professional museum standards.  Curator will maintain proper records to describe each accession’s intrinsic value and establish provenance of each item.
  • Curator works with the Archives and Library Manager to make collaborative decisions and plans for collections storage and management where both two and three-dimensional objects are impacted.
  • Curator partners with historically underserved communities to create equitable relationships to access the collection and expand the scope of collecting areas.
  • Curator will make three-dimensional collection accessible to a wide audience, including online.

 

Exhibits

  • Curator of Objects & Exhibits will develop and install high quality professional exhibits at the History Center to educate visitors on the history of Goodhue County.  Exhibits will be developed to meet professional museum standards or may be loaned through traveling exhibit programs offered by outside entities.  Curator will develop and manage the exhibit calendar.  He/She will write and implement an interpretive plan based on findings from a two-part visitor panel evaluation.

 

 

Programming Assistance

  • Curator of Objects & Exhibits will collaborate with the Education and Outreach Coordinator to assist in planning, development, and delivery of programming and outreach which supports the interpretation of exhibit themes, as well as those related to preservation topics.

 

Other Duties

  • Curator of Objects & Exhibits may be assigned other duties by the Executive Director to assist with special projects or events as necessary.  Curator will serve as a staff member liaison on the Collections Committee and lead staff member on the Exhibits Committee.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors or higher degree in History or Museum Studies but related fields is acceptable.
  • At least three (3) years of experience working in a non-profit/museum is required. Preference for a candidate having experience with collections and exhibits.
  • Preference for a candidate having experience with collections management software, with proficiency in Past Perfect preferred, as well as writing and implementing interpretive strategies, conducting visitor evaluations and exhibit development, collaborating with diverse communities and non-profit organizations.
  • Experience supervising special projects staff, interns and volunteers.

 

General Requirements

  • Must be self-motivated and exhibit good time management skills.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team with the ability to initiate and follow through on independent, as well as assigned projects.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, and Publisher.
  • Administrative proficiency in PastPerfect (preferred), or similar collections management System.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedules including evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, sit or stand for long periods during exhibit construction and/or presentations.
