In the decades leading up to the US Civil War, abolitionists from eastern states migrated westward to thwart the expansion of slavery into the “free” territory. Abolitionists were among the early American settlers arriving in Minnesota in the 1850s. Some of these abolitionists were radical and were involved in the Underground Railroad prior to settling here. Local naturalist, Sara Holger, will share stories she has gathered through oral history interviews with descendants of abolitionists who called southeast Minnesota home before slavery was abolished in America.
